Small Business Hackathons are two-hour events designed to provide hands-on assistance to help you overcome barriers to your business growth. From improving your financial management to attracting more customers, it’s time to stop talking about what you need to do and do it. During these two-hour virtual sessions, you will be matched one-on-one or in a small group with a business professional to help you complete the project for the session theme that you selected. You may sign up for as many different session themes as you need. The business professionals that we bring to the table are excited to share their expertise with you, so take the time to be prepared and ready to make the most of your time together.

Financial Projections Hackathon

Financial Planning

How-to: Create Financial Projections Using our Template

During this Small Business Hackathon session, you will gain an understanding of the inputs needed to create a 36-month financial projections model for your business. At the conclusion of the session, you should have a completed financial model spreadsheet that you can continue to refine on your own as you get more information. To prepare for this session, make a list of your products/services and the corresponding prices, a list of your costs to produce the product/deliver the service, a list of overhead expenses, and your cash balances. If you use financial management software and can have your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement handy as well, even better! If you are starting from scratch, do a little research to come up with your best “guesstimates” as your starting point.

Marketing and Operations Hackathon

Marketing and Operation Planning

How-to: Driving More Traffic to Your Website

Having a website is a start, but that alone isn’t enough to impact your sales. During this Small Business Hackathon session, you will gain an understanding of strategies for getting more people to see and engage with your website and ways that you can use your website to drive sales. You and your business expert will discuss ways to get more people on your site and opportunities to convert visitors to customers. At the conclusion of this session, you will have suggestions for improving your website effectiveness and recommendations for driving more traffic to your website. To prepare for this session, make a list of links to your website and social media. It will be helpful to also have a list of links to competitive websites. If you are able to make changes to your site in real-time, even better!

Creating Social Media Content Templates

While social media is all the rage, it can be time-consuming and overwhelming for busy business owners. During this Small Business Hackathon session, you will discuss your preferred social media channels, the volume of posting that makes sense for you and your business, and the type of content that resonates with your audience. At the conclusion of this session, you will have a posting schedule and sample posts including hashtags to help you pick up the pace of your social media activity. To prepare for this session, make a list of links to your website and social media. If there are influencers and strategic partners that align with your work and your audience, make a list of their social media links to have handy as well!

Creating a Competitive Analysis Chart and/or SWOT Analysis

Knowing what the competition is up to is the first step in identifying your competitive advantages, a key component of marketing and a driver of your sales approach. During this Small Business Hackathon session, you will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your primary competitors, determine your market sweet spot, and identify the attributes that form the foundation of your competitive advantage. At the conclusion of this session, you will have a competitive overview chart that communicates how your business is different and why you are the right choice for your target audience. To prepare for this session, make a list of your primary competitors (with the website url for each) and a summary of what makes you different from each competitor.

What's expected of you

Expectations

Small Business Hackathons provide an amazing opportunity for you to work one-on-one or in small groups with a business expert on your selected project. In order to make the most of their time and yours, it is important that you show up prepared and ready to work. Please be mindful that no-shows will discourage our business experts from wanting to volunteer their time to support the entrepreneurs in the program, so check your calendar and confirm your availability before signing up. If you have an emergency and cannot attend, let us know so that we can make the spot available to the next eager business owner.

No-Show Policy/Cancellation Policy

We have asked business professionals to volunteer their everyday skills to support small business owners who are serious about success. Because no-shows impact our ability to recruit volunteers, we will decline Small Business Hackathon participation to business owners who no-show or cancel multiple times.

All work is conducted virtually

Notes:

You must be available for the entire duration of the event.

The prerequisites must be complete at least 48 hours before the event.
